Passage A

Efficient reading is not simply reading fast; it is reading at a speed suited to one's purpose while understanding what is read. A good reader skims to get the general idea, scans to find particular details and reads intensively when every word matters. Such a reader needs a wide vocabulary and the ability to recognise how sentences and paragraphs are linked. Yet language skills alone are not enough. The reader's frame of mind, their background knowledge of the subject and even the conditions in the room, such as light and noise, all affect how much of a passage is understood.
