AI Governance and Ethical Practice

A short course for Nigerian teachers: what AI is, the difference between using AI well and using it safely, what never goes into an AI tool, what to do when something goes wrong, and how to keep pupils, parents and your own professional standing protected.

Secondary school students gathered round a laptop in their school's ICT room, one pointing at the screen

Why this course

AI is already in Nigerian schools. In 2026 surveys, almost every teacher used AI and most felt confident with it, yet nearly half had put pupils' personal information into AI tools. Most pupils used AI for schoolwork without being told the rules, and nine in ten parents wanted their school to have clear AI rules and to be told when AI is used. Being good at using AI is not the same as using it safely. This course closes that gap.

By the end, you will be able to

  • Explain what AI is, how generative AI works, and what it can and cannot do in a Nigerian classroom
  • Distinguish between AI skills and AI governance, and describe the six pillars of school AI governance
  • Apply the UNESCO principles for the ethics of AI to everyday teaching decisions
  • Check AI output with the 4A check, and take professional responsibility for anything produced with AI
  • Protect pupils' and colleagues' personal data in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023
  • Recognise AI-related safeguarding risks and follow the reporting procedure
  • Set clear AI levels for pupils' tasks, design tasks that need pupils' own thinking, and respond fairly to suspected misuse
  • Be open with parents about AI, and teach pupils to use it safely and honestly
  • Explain your part in your school's AI governance, and commit to the staff AI acceptable use agreement

The lessons

  1. 1. Introduction: What AI Is, and Why This Course

A plain-English introduction to AI, why Nigerian schools now need rules for it, and what you will be able to do by the end.

  2. 2. AI Skills Are Not AI Governance

Feeling confident with AI is not the same as using it safely. Here is the gap, and why it matters.

  3. 3. Ethics: The Principles Behind Every AI Decision

Safeguarding has hard rules. Ethics is the judgement you use when nothing illegal is happening.

  4. 4. Accuracy and Accountability: You Sign It, You Own It

AI can be confidently wrong. Whatever it produces, the professional responsibility stays with you.

  5. 5. Pupil Data: What Never Goes Into AI

The risk that has already happened in many schools, and the simple rules that stop it.

  6. 6. Safeguarding and Reporting

Harmful AI content is a safeguarding matter, not a technical one. Know the route, and use it.

  7. 7. Academic Honesty and Over-Dependence

Parents' top priority. How to set clear AI rules for every task, and design work AI cannot simply do.

  8. 8. Being Open With Parents and Pupils

Parents want to be told. Pupils want to learn. What you can say, and teach, with confidence.

  9. 9. Putting It Into Practice: Your Commitment

How a school's AI governance fits together, your part in it, and the staff agreement you make.

Your certificate

Each lesson ends with practice questions. When you have finished, take the course assessment: score 85% or more and download your certificate of completion. Every certificate has its own ID and QR code, so a head teacher or employer can check it is genuine. You can retake the assessment as often as you need.
