Learning GPS · by Dr Timi Hyacinth

Notice the dip. Before it's a problem.

A child who is struggling rarely says so. Learning GPS asks them, kindly, every day or every week: how hard they pushed, how their day felt, what was tricky. You and their teacher see who needs you, before small problems become big ones.

The Weekly Learning Chat: three questions

1. If school this week were a colour, which would it be?

Why reports come too late

By the end-of-term report, a hard month is old news.

Marks tell you what went wrong after it has gone wrong. How a child feels about their learning, how hard they are pushing and what is getting in their way show up weeks earlier, if someone asks. Learning GPS asks, and puts the answers where you will see them.

Waiting for the report
  • Grades, at the end of term
  • A quiet child goes unnoticed
  • The same struggle, week after week
Learning GPS
  • How they are learning, every week
  • Who needs you, first
  • Patterns spotted early
How it works

A little noticing, often.

  1. 1The Daily PulseUnder two minutes at the end of the day: how hard did I push myself (1 to 5), my day in one word, a traffic light, and what got in my way.
  2. 2The Friday ReflectionAbout ten minutes once a week: my biggest win, what was hardest, the strategy that helped most, and one thing I will do differently.
  3. 3The Weekly Learning ChatFor children under 10: seven questions you read aloud together, about five minutes once a week. What went well, what was tricky, and what colour school was this week.
  4. 4Who needs you, firstParents see each child's week with anything that needs them at the top. Each form teacher opens a Monday list of the pupils who need them, urgent ones first.
